Imagine materials that move, sense, and adapt—just like living tissue. Electroactive polymers (EAPs) are revolutionizing how we design soft robotics systems, offering large, controllable shape and volume changes in response to stimuli such as electric fields, humidity, light, and heat. Yet their full potential has long been restricted by stiff electrodes. This talk explores how recent breakthroughs in artificial muscles developed in our research laboratory. We'll journey you through the latest innovations: from micro-machined electro-thermal actuators, dielectric elastomer actuator, and stretchable thin-film electrodes for robotic applications and tunable optics and acoustics. By mastering the dynamic interface between soft polymers and flexible and even compliant electrodes, we’re opening the door to shape-shifting devices and intelligent systems for robotics and sustainable technologies. - Biography:
Dr. Gih-Keong Lau is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan, and formerly an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He earned his Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology and his M.Eng. and B.Eng. from NTU. His research focuses on micro-actuators, dielectric elastomer actuators, soft robotics, and tunable optics and acoustics, with publications in top journals such as Science Robotics, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, Applied Physics Review and Applied Physics Letters . A recipient of multiple awards including the 2019 NYCU Junior Chair Professor and the 2015 NTU Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship, he has also served as a visiting professor at EPFL and associate editor for IROS (2017–2019). His work has been widely recognized in international media and supported by major funding agencies in Taiwan, Singapore, and the Netherlands.
劉義強博士現任為國立陽明交通大學機械工程系教授,曾任新加坡南洋理工大學助理教授。他取得荷蘭台夫特理工大學機械工程博士學位(2007),以及南洋理工大學碩士與學士學位(1998 及2001)。劉博士的研究專長包括微型致動器、介電彈性體致動器、軟體機器人及可調光學與聲學技術,並在《Science Robotics》、《IEEE Transactions on Robotics》、《Applied Physics Review》、《Applied Physics Letters》等頂尖期刊發表多篇論文。他曾獲得多項榮譽,包括2019年陽明交通大學青年講座教授獎與2015年陳振傳基金會獎,並於瑞士洛桑聯邦理工學院(EPFL)擔任訪問教授,亦曾任IEEE/RSJ國際智能機器人與系統會議(IROS 2017–2019)副主編。他的研究成果廣受國際媒體關注,並獲台灣、新加坡及荷蘭多個政府與產業機構資助。
